RAVIN JAY
Advocate & Solicitor, High Court of Malaya
LL.B (Hons), LL.M (Public International Law)
Ravin Jay is an experienced criminal defence lawyer with a strong track record of representing clients across all levels of the Malaysian courts. Called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2009 (Gray’s Inn) and admitted to the High Court of Malaya in 2011, Ravin has dedicated over a decade to defending individuals facing serious criminal charges—including capital offences such as murder, drug trafficking, and kidnapping, as well as cases involving firearms, terrorism, white-collar crime, and organised crime.
He is regularly briefed on complex and high-profile cases and is known for his meticulous preparation, fearless advocacy, and commitment to justice. Ravin has successfully appeared in the Court of Appeal and Federal Court, including in cases of constitutional significance. He is on the government’s panel of assigned counsel for capital cases, where he represents individuals unable to afford legal representation.
Among his notable work, Ravin was part of the legal team in Rovin Joty a/l Kodeeswaran v Lembaga Pencegahan Jenayah & Ors and Nivesh Nair a/l Mohan v Dato’ Abdul Razak bin Musa & Ors, landmark Federal Court decisions which struck down provisions of the Prevention of Crime Act 1959 as unconstitutional. In these cases, he appeared alongside the late Dato’ Seri Gopal Sri Ram, former judge of the Federal Court of Malaysia.
In addition to his courtroom practice, Ravin has international experience as a former Protection Associate with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Kuala Lumpur, where he worked on matters involving arrest, detention, and protection of asylum seekers and refugees.
Ravin holds a Master of Laws in Public International Law from Bournemouth University, United Kingdom, and continues to integrate his international legal training with his commitment to upholding human rights and constitutional protections in Malaysia.
